The Ultimate Guide to Traveling for Your Goal Race: Packing and Preparation Tips

Updated: Sep 15

Are you gearing up for a big race? Whether you're tackling a marathon, half-marathon, or any distance in between, traveling for your goal race can be incredibly exciting—and a bit overwhelming! To help you stay organized and ensure race day goes smoothly, I’ve put together a comprehensive guide to race packing and preparation. Read on for essential tips and download the handy packing list to make sure you’re all set for your race weekend.

Before we get started, Hi! I'm Jen! I'm the founder of the Misadventure Squad, a certified run coach, girl mom, teacher, and beach lover. I fell in love with running at the age of 21 and never looked back. Be sure to come say on Instagram if that's your thing. Oh, and if you love free running resources, be sure to snag some here.

Race Prep Tips & Packing Hacks

1. Research Your Destination

Weather Forecast: Check the weather in advance to pack appropriately. Knowing if it’s going to be rainy or sunny will help you choose the right gear. This is my favorite site/app for accurate weather forecasts.

Local Transportation: Investigate transportation options like public transit or car rentals. Planning ahead will save you time and stress.

Nearby Amenities: Locate local grocery stores, pharmacies, and restaurants. This will be handy for last-minute needs and fueling up before the race.

2. Confirm Race Details

Race Schedule: Make a note of the start time and any pre-race events or activities. Perhaps create a note in your Notes App for all links/times/events for the race.

Packet Pickup: Verify the location and timing for race packet pickup so you get your bib and timing chip on time.

Race Instructions: Review any specific instructions from the race organizers to avoid surprises.

3. Arrange Travel and Accommodations

Travel Booking: Secure your flights or other transportation early. Arriving a day or two before the race allows for acclimation and reduces travel fatigue.

Accommodation: Choose a hotel or rental close to the race start line. Look for accommodations offering early breakfast or flexible check-in to make race day easier.

4. Packing Essentials for Race Weekend

Race Gear: Pack your well-worn running shoes (these shoes are what I'm currently running in), race outfit, and any additional gear you need. Avoid breaking in new shoes right before race day to prevent blisters.

Tech Gear: Ensure your running watch or GPS device is fully charged and bring its charging cable. Don’t forget your headphones and their charger if you run with music.

Clothing: Include comfortable clothes for both race day and downtime. Pack layers, casual wear, pajamas, and enough socks and underwear. This 3-pocket sports bra is a must have!

Race day outfit: this needs its own category - socks, shoes, shorts, top, bra, anti-chafe cream (try this one), headphones, hydration carrying, bib, gels/chews, electrolytes, hat/sunglasses. This is a fave of mine to help organize all the things.

5. Hydration and Nutrition

Water Bottle: Bring a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated during your trip.

Snacks: Pack energy bars, gels, or snacks you’ve trained with. This helps with pre-race fueling and recovery.

6. Personal Care Items

Sunscreen: Protect your skin from sunburn, especially if your race is in a sunny location. Use a high-SPF, broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Anti-Chafe Cream: Prevent chafing and blisters with a quality anti-chafe cream

First Aid Kit: Include band-aids, blister pads, and any personal medications. Here's one that is small and portable.

7. Race Day Essentials

ID and Medical Information: Carry ID and essential medical details, such as allergies or health conditions.

Cash and Credit Cards: Bring a small amount of cash and a credit card for last-minute purchases or emergencies.

Phone and Charger (& headphone charger): Ensure your phone is fully charged and bring a charger like this one for race-day updates and photos.

8. Travel Documentation

Itinerary and Race Confirmation: Keep copies of your travel itinerary, including flight details, hotel reservations, and race registration confirmation.

Final Tips for a Successful Race Trip

Arrive Early: Aim to reach your destination a day or two before the race to adjust, recover from travel, and get familiar with the area.

Stick to Your Routine: Maintain your usual pre-race routine as closely as possible. This includes familiar foods, sleep schedules, and rituals.

Enjoy the Experience: Embrace the adventure of racing in a new place. Explore the area, meet fellow runners, and savor the entire experience.
