Mindset Tips That Helped Me PR My Marathon

Running a marathon is an incredible achievement, and the journey to the finish line is as much mental as it is physical. Here are the mindset tips that played a crucial role in helping me achieve a personal record (PR) in my marathon. Whether you’re a seasoned runner or training for your first marathon, these insights can help you elevate your performance.

Now..onto the mindset tips.


1. Respect the Distance

Marathons are not just another race; they are a true test of endurance and determination. It's fantastic if you no longer fear the 26.2 miles – it means you've put in countless hours and miles of training, and you should be immensely proud of that. However, it’s essential to respect the distance.


The marathon distance should never be taken lightly. We often hear that a marathon is never given, and this cannot be emphasized enough. Each marathon presents its own set of challenges, and no matter how many times you’ve run one, it’s always a monumental effort. Reminding yourself of the distance’s significance helps you maintain the right level of humility and preparation. Each mile demands respect, and recognizing this will help you approach your training and race day with the seriousness and dedication it requires.


2. Gratitude Wins

Gratitude is a powerful tool that can transform your running experience. It might sound cliché, but the benefits of practicing gratitude are well-documented across various aspects of life, from running to parenting, work, and marriage.


When you lace up your shoes and step up to the starting line, take a moment to feel grateful. Be thankful for your health, the ability to run, and the journey that has brought you here. Acknowledge the police officers working the course, the volunteers who provide support, and the running community that shares this experience with you. These small moments of gratitude can have a profound impact on your mindset, keeping you positive and motivated throughout the race.


Gratitude shifts your focus from what might go wrong to appreciating the opportunity you have. It can help reduce anxiety and foster a positive outlook, making the miles feel more manageable and the experience more enjoyable. So, practice gratitude regularly, and let it be a source of strength during your marathon.


3. Crowds & Number of Runners Matter

When selecting your goal race, consider the crowd support and the number of runners on the course. These factors can significantly influence your mindset and overall race experience.


Crowd support can be incredibly uplifting. The cheers, encouragement, and energy from spectators can provide a much-needed boost, especially during the tougher parts of the race. Running alongside a large number of participants can also be motivating, creating a sense of camaraderie and shared purpose.


However, some runners prefer smaller races with less congestion. It’s essential to know what environment suits you best. If large crowds energize you, opt for well-attended races. If you prefer a quieter, more focused race, seek out smaller events. Understanding how these elements affect your mindset will help you choose races that align with your preferences, enhancing your overall experience and performance.


4. The Gain

One of the most impactful mindset shifts I’ve adopted is focusing on the gain rather than the gap. This means concentrating on how far you’ve come instead of how far you have left to go.


Reflect on where your training began and the progress you’ve made. Consider where your running journey started and the milestones you’ve achieved. This positive focus can significantly influence your mental state during the race. Instead of fixating on the miles ahead and how difficult they may seem, celebrate the accomplishments you’ve already made.


Focusing on the gain helps you maintain a positive attitude, reducing feelings of frustration, discouragement, and fatigue. It reinforces the idea that you are capable and strong, having already overcome numerous challenges to get where you are. This mindset will keep you motivated and resilient, especially when the race gets tough.
